Frequently asked EFT Questions

Is EFT ONLY an energy based technique?

NO.

EFT is a combination of acupressure (energy based) and modern psycho-therapeutic tools like NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming ), EMDR (Eye movement Desensitization and Reprocessing ) and BT (Behavior Therapy). The Affirmations used in EFT are actually from NLP.  9 gamut procedure is similar to EMDR .

Is EFT  a distraction technique?

NO.

EFT requires tuning into the problem every step of the way. Even while doing the eye exercises one has to be tuned in to the problem.  Distraction requires NOT thinking about the problem whereas affirmations and reminder phrase are used to THINK about the problem.

Why do we affirm the negatives in EFT?

EFT works on the negative, by first identifying it, then stating it and accepting oneself with it.  Self acceptance does wonders . Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) regards the way we talk to ourselves as one of the most important tools in changing thought and behavior patterns. EFT uses the affirmation method from NLP.

Can there be abreactions in EFT?

Yes. There can be emotions that come to the surface after tapping. These are usually repressed emotions. However, applying EFT on them immediately, will bring relief.

Can the client become aware of other areas concerning the problem which he/she wasn’t aware of to begin with?

The client becomes more aware of other areas as he/she resolves the present problems. It’s like peeling an onion.  Layer after Layer. As you resolve one issue another may pop up till all the chronic problems are resolved.

How long do I continue tapping?

How long do you continue exercising, taking medicines? You exercise daily and take medicines when required. Right?  In the same way EFT is a tool for lifetime. Apply it when required and also use it daily to improve your emotional and physical well being.

Why is EFT so simple?

EFT looks very simple. However, the main part of EFT is the affirmations and they are not as simple as they look. In order to get relief from chronic problems, the affirmations must be phrased properly for EFT to be effective. Targeting the core issues, linking past and present indicators of any problem, applying the advanced techniques in EFT are all required to handle  chronic cases.

There are so many OTHER Healing methods available.  Should I apply them?

Before you try any healing method,  check the theories on which it is based. Theories are the foundation of any healing method and if they are not sound then the whole healing method can collapse; not work.   Please verify the credentials of the proponent of the methods. Also any therapists should have a few years of experience.  A good healing method should have the backing of research and should be tried and tested. Please avoid therapies that don’t have any research listed.

Basic knowledge of brain and psychology is important to distinguish between genuine and fake methods.  You can get basic knowledge from any psychology website. I have had many clients who came to me after trying several techniques and while they got some relief, most of these techniques had caused more damage to their thinking and beliefs than  good.

I read a book about a new method claiming that it is faster than EFT and it claimed that “Thoughts are things “ The author of the book doesn’t even have the basic knowledge of the inner workings of the brain. Let me explain.

What are thoughts? Thoughts are NOT things but neural patterns. A THOUGHT IS A RESULT OF PATTERNED NEURAL ACTIVITY.

Thoughts originate in your mind (mind is a function of the brain).  If a person doesn’t even have this knowledge, what can you expect from his/her new healing method???

A word of Caution for the Wise – Please don’t try new methods if you have chronic or acute psychological problems such as anxiety, panic attacks, dissociation, mental retardation, psychosis. This also applies for chronic physical problems. For e.g if an epileptic patient goes for music therapy, it may aggravate his condition and so will magnet therapy. Please exercise caution.
